"Winged
Flowers" is the term Jose MI. Perdomo, Founding Director of The Eclectus
Society, uses to describe the Eclectus Parrot. In aviculture, the Eclectus
has approximately 100 years of successful propagation in captivity. This
medium-sized parrot (12 to 14 inches tall ), with its brilliant
colorations, is sexually dimorphic: the male and female are distinctly
separable by their colorations. The feathers have a hair-like structure
and are tightly interlocked. They have a smooth beak surface, which is
also distinctly different between the sexes. The Eclectus parrot is
intelligent, excelling in speech abilities, with patient coaching, can
learn sufficient phrases and sentences to appear to engage in
conversation. As pets, they demand attention and company without looking
for constant petting or physical contact. They will, however, enjoy
sitting in the lap of their master to watch television. Life spans are
estimated to almost 40 years old. The Solomon Island Eclectus are the smallest of the
Eclectus species with an average weight of 325 to 425 grams.

| The Male Solomon Island
Eclectus is bright emerald green with iridescent blue in the upper bend of
his wings. The scarlet red on the underside of his wings spreads to part
of his chest. His upper beak is an orange gradient to yellow with a black
lower mandible. Males are generally easier to manage and make better pets
for new owners.

The Female Solomon Island
Eclectus as a breeder is the dominant partner and, except for mating
season, exhibits a strong personality. Her feathers are gradients of red
and blue, or purple. The adult hen will have a shiny dark black beak.
Young females, under a year of age, have a yellow tip on their black beak.
As pets, they blend well into most family life styles. |
